A CORDON was put in place at Hockley train station after a "suspicious" item was reported on the tracks.

Officers from British Transport Police cordoned off the area surrounding the station after receiving a report, understood to be raising concerns over an explosive device on the rails.

The Echo understands the item was later determined to be a discarded vape which had been mistaken for something more serious, with BTP confirming officers assessed the item before determining it was not suspicious.

The cordon was removed after approximately 45 minutes, with BTP and Essex Police issuing reassurance to residents alarmed by the emergency presence in the area and thanking them for their understanding.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a suspicious item at Hockley railway station at 6.15pm on April 2.

"Officers attended and assessed the item which was not deemed to be suspicious.”
