A resident at a Basildon care home is celebrating a lifelong achievement after publishing a children’s book written more than 30 years ago.

Joyce, who lives at Woodbury Court Care Home in Laindon, has officially published "The Tale of Dilly Down".

The book was originally written in 1992, when Joyce was 60, for her grandchildren and future great‑grandchildren, and has now been published in 2026 just in time of her 95th birthday.

The publication was made possible with the support of one of Joyce’s grandchildren, who helped turn the family story into a finished book.

Set in a peaceful woodland village, the story follows a community of animals whose lives are disrupted by a troublesome group of weasels.

The story explores themes of courage, kindness, friendship and the strength of community.

Staff at Woodbury Court, which is part of the Runwood Homes Group, said Joyce’s creativity continues to inspire residents and colleagues alike.

A spokesman for Woodbury Court said: "Everyone is incredibly proud of Joyce and this fantastic achievement.

"Her story is a reminder that it is never too late to share your talents and bring your dreams to life.”

Staff at Woodbury Court said the book has a timeless feel that appeals to both children and adults.

Joyce’s creativity has become a source of inspiration for other residents at the care home.

The team said her achievement highlights the importance of encouraging residents to continue pursuing their passions.

Joyce’s love of storytelling has remained strong throughout her life, and she often shares memories of writing the story and reading it to her family.

The publication of the book has been described as a proud moment for everyone at the home.

Joyce is already working on her next writing project, titled "Mum’s Story at Woodbury Court".

The new book will focus on her life experiences and time spent at the care home.

Staff say they are excited to support Joyce as she continues her writing journey.
