A celebrity chef has named an Essex pub praised for its food, service and historic setting as her favourite in the UK.

Thuy Diem Pham, a best-selling cookbook author, chef and regular contributor to BBC Good Food and Waitrose, highlighted the Galvin Green Man in Chelmsford as her top pick in a recent feature in the Express.

The Galvin Green Man is led by the Galvin brothers.

Ms Pham is a familiar face on television and recently appeared on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch to promote her latest cookbook, One Pan Vietnam.

Proud winner of the National Pub & Bar Awards for the East of England, Galvin Green Man is set on the banks of the River Chelmer in Great Waltham.

The pub is one of the oldest in Essex, dating back to 1341.

Food is central to its appeal, with a menu focused on seasonal ingredients and simple, skilful preparation.

The venue, which includes a full dining room and dog-friendly pub, also features a riverside garden, children’s play area and private dining rooms.

It has also attracted the attention of celebrities, including Fred Sirieix, Maitre D at Channel 4’s First Dates restaurant, who attended its launch in 2016.

Galvin Green Man is listed in the Michelin Guide and holds a Bib Gourmand award for offering high-quality food at good value.

The Michelin Guide states: "The friendly team offer a warm welcome and the original 14th-century building provides all the rustic charm you’d expect, while a modern barn extension and a charming riverside garden complete the picture.

"The extensive menu offers an appealing mix of classic British and Mediterranean influenced dishes which are big on flavour, and the 'Bib Gourmand' menu is a steal."
