RESIDENTS are urged to stay away from a south Essex beach after a whale was found dead.

The small whale was first found at Holehaven Creek, on Canvey near the former coastwatch jetty, this morning with coastguard officers seen on the beach after it was reported.

Castle Point Council alongside specialists are working to recover the whale's body and have urged the public to stay away from the scene in the meantime.

A Castle Point Council spokesman said: "We are aware of a whale sadly deceased on the beach on Canvey.

"Castle Point Council and specialist agencies are managing the recovery process.

"Public are advised to stay away from the scene."
