A "serious" water leak caused flooding and disruption on Rayleigh High Street last night.

The leak, which happened around 9pm on Rayleigh High Street, saw Squires Coffee Shop and La Romantica seemingly hit worst.

Councillor Danielle Belton shared on Facebook last night: "The road remains closed whilst the extent of the damage to the highway is established."

Rochford District Council attended the scene following her request and the water main was shut off by 11pm.

AA shows the road remains closed from Bellingham Lane to Church Street.

A spokesman for Squires Coffee Shop shared last night: "Thank you to everyone who helped especially Stuart Belton for his very hard work and friends who arrived with brooms."

Photos shared by the coffee shop showed water flooding into the premises.
