A fresh closure at the Tarpots junction in Benfleet is set to begin this week, following major disruption seen from the recent gas works.

The overnight closure will allow Essex Highways to start resurfacing between August 14 and 22, running from 8.15pm to 5am.

Benfleet’s busy junction on the A13 was previously closed by Cadent between June 29 and August 4.

Although it was scheduled to stay shut until August 15, Cadent completed repairs ahead of schedule and reopened the road early.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: "Now that Cadent has completed its works on the A13 London Road, Benfleet, our overnight resurfacing programme will proceed as planned from 14 to 22 August, between 8.15pm and 5am."

The work forms part of a wider project to upgrade nearly 800 metres of metal gas pipes along the A13, London Road between Sadlers Farm and the junction with Rushbottom Lane and High Road.

Many of the pipes are between 80 and 100 years old and have required frequent repairs, leading to ongoing traffic disruption.

The previous closure caused severe delays across south Essex, affecting major routes such as the A130 and A127.

Although the 24-hour closure has been lifted, lane restrictions remain on High Road while Cadent completes work between Rileys and Tesco Express.

Two-way traffic is being maintained until the work is finished, which is expected by August 15.
