A person has died following an incident on the railway.

Emergency services were called to Benfleet station shortly after 9.30pm yesterday, 18 August, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Officers attended, along with paramedics, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene."

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

A cordon was put in place last night as residents reported seeing a large emergency services presence in the area.
