Tributes have been paid to a respected councillor and community champion in south Essex who has died at the age of 89.
Chris Lumley, who served as a Rayleigh Town councillor and represented the Sweyne Park and the Grange area on Rochford District Council, passed away peacefully on July 22 at Southend Hospital.
Described by his family as a "true gentleman," Mr Lumley was known for his dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to the Rayleigh community.
His daughter, Jayne Wall, said: "Our beloved Chris was a true gentleman, a kind man with a dry sense of humour who loved his family dearly.
"He lived a long and happy life in Rayleigh, the town he loved and served, alongside his wife of 60 years.
"He leaves behind three daughters and five grandchildren; all of whom will cherish his memory and the love he generously gave.
"We are grateful for the care given by Southend Hospital Hockley Ward, and by the home carers in recent months. His warmth, dignity, quiet strength, and presence will be greatly missed."
Colleagues and fellow councillors have also shared their memories and paid tribute to Mr Lumley’s legacy.
Danielle Belton, a councillor for Rochford, said: "Chris was involved in local politics long before I was. He was a well-respected local councillor by all parties.
"He was a great advocate for the community and always gave me support as a young person trying to get into local politics.
"He was very well liked, and he had a huge impact on a large number of people in Rayleigh and the surrounding areas."
Cheryl Roe, who served alongside Mr Lumley on both Rayleigh Town Council and Rochford District Council, said: "He was a lovely man. He was very well mannered and an exceptional councillor.
"He is definitely going to be missed. When I first came on the council, he was already there and he could not have been more supportive to me.
"He was amazing and me feel so welcome. He put the residents first and he always wanted to help whenever he could. He just liked helping people. He was a really good guy."
Mr Lumley’s funeral was held on Friday, August 21.
