Councillors approved the £1.64 million development at a Basildon Council planning meeting on August 19
The development at Mill Green will deliver eight one-bedroom bungalows for council residents, helping to meet housing demand in the borough.
Two of the properties will be built to M4(3) standards, making them fully wheelchair accessible and adding to the council’s accessible housing stock.
The homes will be constructed on a hard-standing area where play equipment was removed several years ago.
According to the council, the site has experienced issues with anti-social behaviour, poor lighting and limited visibility.
Basildon Council has worked with Essex Police and its Secured by Design team on the proposals, which include a revised layout, new lighting columns and improved passive surveillance of the surrounding park area.
The measures are intended to help increase safety and security for both future residents and the wider community.
The housing development forms part of the council’s wider efforts to deliver more homes across the borough while making use of underutilised land.
Phil Turner, councillor responsible for housing, welcomed the decision and said the scheme would provide much-needed accommodation while improving the environment around the site.
