Orsett Hall officially closed ahead of major transformation

Orsett Hall officially closed last month and is now expected to remain shut for around 14 months while extensive refurbishment works are carried out.

The four-star hotel, set within 12 acres of landscaped gardens, was acquired by hospitality group Barons Eden in November 2025 before the company rebranded as Hiddenwell earlier this year.

Before closing, the venue featured 56 bedrooms, five bridal suites, a chapel, boutique spa and a range of function and event spaces.

Hiddenwell has confirmed plans to reopen the site as a destination spa hotel in 2028.

A new page on the company's website states: "A brand new Hiddenwell spa hotel is set to arrive in Essex in 2028.

"Prepare for stunning Spa-scapes, idyllic countryside getaways, and moments of pure relaxation."

The closure comes after a major planning application was submitted to Thurrock Council in June for significant upgrades to the site.

Proposals include new indoor spa facilities, additional dining areas, spa gardens, a covered walkway, a gym and studio space, and extra parking.

Plans also include converting the existing pavilion into spa facilities featuring pools and relaxation areas, while a new extension would house thermal spa features and a vitality pool.

Two outdoor spa garden areas are proposed, complete with pools, saunas and steam rooms.

The scheme would also see the historic entrance restored as the main access point for guests, with the reception relocated to the centre of the main hall.

Additional parking would increase the site's capacity to 297 spaces, including disabled bays and electric vehicle charging points.

When the acquisition was announced last year, Hiddenwell chief executive Ed Law said Orsett Hall was "a particularly well-situated beautiful countryside hotel in Essex".

He added the company was excited by the opportunity to "significantly invest in the property to create a destination spa resort so close to London".

A decision on the planning application is yet to be made by Thurrock Council.
