A vibrant new mural has been unveiled in Wickford, transforming a wall previously targeted by graffiti into a colourful community landmark.
The artwork has been completed in the High Street following a collaboration between Wickford in Bloom, Wickford Together, The Willows and McDonald's Community Fund.
Created by artist Chris Bardell, the mural features a striking display of flowers designed to brighten the area and provide a welcoming view for residents and visitors.
The location was specifically chosen because it had become a frequent target for graffiti and tagging.
Wickford Together said the project demonstrated what could be achieved when organisations work together to improve public spaces.
A spokesman said: "The mural has officially been completed by the incredible Chris Bardell Art.
"We are thrilled to share a first look at our brand-new community mural, which is officially replacing a long-standing graffiti hotspot with a gorgeous, vibrant wall of flowers.
“This massive transformation is the result of a fantastic collaborative effort with The Willows, McDonald’s Wickford, Wickford in Bloom and Wickford Together working together to clean up and beautify our High Street.”
The mural has been treated with a special anti-graffiti coating to help keep it looking fresh and protect it from future vandalism.
Organisers also hoped the artwork would create a more attractive feature for people travelling through the town by train.
A spokesman for Wickford in Bloom added: “A huge thank you to Chris Bardell Art for creating this amazing mural, we are so pleased with how it looks.
“Thanks to Wickford Together, the landlord of the Willows and McDonald's Community fund for the collaboration with ourselves to make this happen.
“It's amazing what can be achieved when everyone pulls together, let's hope this can be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.”
The mural forms part of wider efforts by community groups to enhance the appearance of Wickford through floral displays and environmental improvements.
Organisers hope the new artwork will be enjoyed for years to come while helping create a cleaner and more welcoming town centre.
