Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed when Gallows Corner is expected to fully reopen after more than a year of disruption.
The major junction is set to reopen by the end of September, following the completion of major water works by Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW).
Complex work by ESW teams to divert and replace multiple water pipes underneath Gallows Corner has now been completed, allowing TfL to begin final reinstatement and resurfacing in the area.
Scott Haxton, TfL’s director of capital delivery infrastructure, said: "We look forward to seeing the flyover opening at the end of the month.
"We’d like to apologise to local residents, businesses and road users for the delays to these works and thank them for their patience while this essential project has been carried out.
"Essex & Suffolk Water has now completed its works and handed the site back to us, allowing us to move into the final phase of the project.
"We’re working closely with our contractor, Costain, to complete the remaining resurfacing and reinstatement work as quickly and safely as possible."
The water works were initially intended to coincide with TfL's renewal of the ageing Gallows Corner flyover - which started in June 2025 - to reduce disruption.
But issues with the water main replacement meant that, even after the new flyover was installed, the junction remained partially closed since May.
ESW announced the completion of its works and handed the site back to TfL on Monday (August 31), with final reinstatement and resurfacing works now underway in the areas where water works were carried out.
This will include a full weekend closure and two overnight closures before the flyover and roundabout fully reopen to general traffic at the end of the month.
Once reopened, all remaining traffic management and diversion routes will be removed.
Larger vehicles will once again be able to use the flyover, with previous speed and weight restrictions lifted.
