Hundreds of runners will take part in the Basildon Half Marathon this weekend with a series of road closures planned for the event.

The race, presented by Utilize in support of Changing Pathways, takes place on Sunday, starting and finishing at Basildon Sporting Village.

Runners of all abilities are expected to take part, from first-time half marathon entrants to experienced athletes chasing a personal best.

The half marathon starts at 9am and follows a route made up of closed roads and public paths through Basildon.

A junior race will also take place, beginning at 9.45am.

Several roads will close from 8.30am as part of the event, including Courtauld Road, which reopens at 10am, and Pound Lane, which reopens at 11am.

Burnt Mills Road, Felmores and East Mayne are set to reopen at 11.45am, while Cranes Farm Road will reopen at midday.

Ghyllgrove will remain closed for the longest period, reopening at 12.15pm.

Participants in the half marathon must be aged 17 or over, while the junior event is open to children aged up to 11.

The half marathon has a three-hour cut-off time, with runners needing to finish by midday because of the road closure arrangements.

Water stations will be available approximately every five kilometres along the route, with refreshments, medals and post-race goodies waiting at the finish line.

Bag storage facilities and portable toilets will also be available within the event village.

Each kilometre of the course will be clearly marked and marshals will be stationed throughout the route to guide and support runners.

Organisers said: "Whether you're chasing a new PB or completing your first ever half marathon, everyone is invited to be part of this fun, supportive race day.

"With RunThrough you can expect a friendly team of marshals to help guide you round the course and cheer you on to the finish.

“We can't wait to welcome you to the Basildon Half Marathon and Juniors Presented by Utilize.”
