A man has been charged after a van was allegedly stolen from the driveway of a home in Benfleet.

The white van was reported stolen from a property in Chapel Lane at around 11.35pm on Tuesday, September 29.

Officers later found the vehicle at an industrial estate near the A127, but it failed to stop for police.

Roads policing officers, assisted by road crime and operational support officers, stopped the vehicle after a pursuit.

The driver fled but was later arrested.

Sean Cole, 27, of North Crockerford, Basildon, has now been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to provide for a breath test, criminal damage, possession of a bladed article, and possession of a Class B drug.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on October 1.

Adam Pipe, head of roads policing, said: "The number of teams involved in this incident shows just how seriously we take the safety of our roads."
