More than 1,000 metres of ageing gas pipes will be replaced in Saffron Walden.
Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distributor, will install new pipes along Little Walden Road, Byrds Farm Lane, Catons Lane, The Green and Goddard Way.
Work will start on Monday, October 12, and is expected to finish 11 weeks later on Monday, December 21.
Eleanor Buxton, Head of Work Management at Cadent, said: "The metallic pipes that are in place in this section of the network have been very well used for almost 100 years.
"It’s now time for them to be replaced so that we can continue to deliver gas to people's homes 24/7, 365 days a year.

"These upgrades also have big environmental gains, as they reduce methane emissions and enable a move to more renewable gases like biomethane.
"This is essential for a cleaner future – the UK will need energy to come from a range of sources to meet demand and be sustainable."
A public drop-in event will take place on Monday, September 28, from 11am to 1pm at The Green, Saffron Walden.
Residents and business owners will have the opportunity to speak with Cadent’s customer team to learn more about the scheme, how it will be carried out, and the expected impact on daily life.
No appointment is needed.
The project has been planned in consultation with Essex County Council.
A range of traffic management measures will be in place throughout the works, including road closures and temporary traffic lights.
Diversion routes will be clearly marked, and access for residents will be maintained where it is safe to do so.
Cadent will work weekends where possible to ensure the project is completed as efficiently as possible.
Gas supplies will remain unaffected for most properties throughout the duration of the works.
Only those properties directly connected to the pipes being replaced will experience a temporary interruption, which will be limited to the same day and carried out with advance notice.
Anyone who smells gas is advised to call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.
