The rollout of a new recycling service to homes across Tendring is now under way.

The service started on Monday (October 5) allowing residents to recycle more items in their green boxes.

This is part of a nationwide initiative, with every council in England introducing a standard list of recyclable materials to be collected from households.

The scheme aims to increase recycling and reuse.

From October 2026, in addition to the usual items, the green boxes will also accept glass bottles and jars, plastic pots, tubs and trays, juice cartons, toothpaste and food tubes, and foil trays.

Black-bin and recycling collections will remain unchanged.

An extra green box and lid will have been delivered to all eligible households during August and September for these additional materials.

The council has also outlined the different types of waste and where they should be disposed of.

The red recycling box, collected on alternate weeks, is for paper and card, including corrugated cardboard, telephone directories, shopping catalogues, and mixed paper including junk mail.

The green recycling box, also collected on alternate weeks, is for glass bottles and jars, pots, tubs, trays, tins, cans, plastic bottles, juice and Tetra Pak cartons, foil trays, and metal and plastic tubes.

Food caddies take cooked and uncooked food, teabags, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, beans, cereal, fruit, vegetables, salads, peelings, dairy products, eggs and shells, and fish.

The council also offers a kerbside textile collection service in conjunction with Essex Textiles.

Blue bags can be used for clean, reusable clothes, curtains, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, bedding and towels.

Tendring’s four recycling centres are at Rush Green Road in Clacton, Malting Lane in Kirby-le-Soken, Greensmill in Lawford and West End Lane in Dovercourt.
