ELECTROPOP sensations La Roux play a Glastonbury Festival warm-up at Chinnery’s, Southend, on Tuesday, June 23.

Singer and synth player Elly Jackson and co-writer and producer Ben Langmaid, have recently been riding high at the top of the UK charts with their second single, In For the Kill, which climbed to number two.

The name of the act comes from a book of baby names which Ben found in a bin. The name La Roux was French for red-haired one, lending a nice nod to Elly’s flame-coloured quiff.

Elly has been linked to a pop music trend which features androgynous 20-something women with a strong individualistic attitude.

She has cited musicians David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Prince, actress Molly Ringwald, and TV presenter Elton Welsby as her main influences.

La Roux’s music is largely influenced by Eighties synth pop, including Basildon duo Depeche Mode and Yazoo, plus the Eurythmics and Human League.

Tickets for the gig, which are priced £8.50, and sure to sell out fast, are available from: Fives, Leigh; PMT, Southend; www.seetickets. com and the front bar of Chinnery’s, in Marine Parade.

Doors at the venue open at 8pm and support acts will be announced nearer the date.
