A CANCER specialist from India has visited Southend Hospital to see the NHS in action.
Dr Sanjukta Padhi visited the hospital after winning an international award.
She chose to come to Southend after meeting the hospital’s consultant clinical oncologist, Dr Krishnaswamy Madhavan, two years ago, when he organised a workshop on technology and access in radiotherapy in Chennai.
Dr Padhi, who chose to specialise in oncology after her mother was diagnosed with cancer, said: “I wanted to see how the NHS functions, for oncology patients in particular. Access to health care in India is a difficult issue.
“I am looking at the whole spectrum of cancer services at Southend and have been very impressed by the technology of radiotherapy treatment, as well as the trust’s information technology, like the electronic records.
“I am hoping some of the techniques can be adopted in India.”
Dr Padhi was recently awarded the Nucletron-Association of Radiation Oncologists of India international fellowship.
