A MUSIC store which featured in a Morrissey video 21 years ago is set to close.
HMV will close one of its two stores in Southend next month, after nearly 20 years in the town.
The Queens Road shop famously appeared in Morrissey’s music video in the 1980s for the single Every Day is Like Sunday when it was called Golden Disc.
It will close for the last time on August 8, while the newer store in High Street, which HMV took over from Zavvi at Christmas, will remain open.
Staff have been told they can accept redundancy or be moved to different stores.
Lauren Passfield, 21, of Toledo Road, Southend, works in the store.
She said: “The team there is absolutely brilliant. They are probably the best people I have worked with. That’s why everyone is so upset because we have to part ways. The morale there was absolutely brilliant.
“It’s sad the store has to close, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”
She has already gained another job with HSBC which she will start next month.
HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “HMV has recently taken on a much larger and better positioned site in the High Street, which has enabled us to extend our music, film and games offers in Southend.
“While we are in consultation with work colleagues based at the old Queens Road site, where the lease has now ended, we’re confident we will be able to find alternative positions for anyone wishing to remain with the organisation – both in the new Southend store and in other HMV stores within Essex.”
