I was reminded of an incident last year after reading Cheryl Cutter’s letter (Nov 5) about finding a partridge in Southend High Street.
When visiting my daughter in Milton Street, Southend, we discovered sitting on her step was a woodcock. We took photos as neither of my daughters had ever seen a woodcock, a tasty game bird.
I was informed by a gamekeeper friend of mine that it had probably got lost in the bright moonlight the night before. A few hours later it flew off.
Before this incident, I had witnessed a sparrowhawk in the same garden.
It’s hardly surprising, with the countryside rapidly disappearing, these wonderful creatures are moving into town.
The partridge had the same bad luck, but luckily it was found by a kind person, since these are also tasty birds.
