I received a letter from Southend Council stating I had requested a parking permit. This was news to me as I had done no such thing.

I spoke to the department responsible and was informed that there were no restrictions on its use.

Providing the permit is on display on the windscreen my car could be parked free anywhere in the town. So in theory even my wife could park for nothing.

I think it is outrageous this perk is being given to councillors when the council has raised parking charges throughout the town to scandalously high levels. Retailers have repeatedly begged the council not to raise charges any higher and have been ignored.

I have returned my permit because I believe council allowances already cover such costs. When I do park in and around the town I expect to pay like anyone else.

I hope other councillors will see that this exercise has been a misguided one and follow my lead by returning their permits.
