A CONTROVERSIAL traffic experiment in Billericay has been put on hold.
Norsey Road, in the town centre, was closed to High Street-bound traffic between Crown Road and the High Street at the end of August to protect pedestrians using the narrow, low, pavement.
However, the experiment soon caused anger among residents living in nearby Stock Road and the St Andrew's estate, who claimed Essex County Council's scheme had caused gridlock outside their homes.
Residents are now celebrating after the council removed the barricades on Monday and turned the 100m stretch of Norsey Road back into a two-way street.
However, county council transport chief Rodney Bass tempered their joy by announcing that the removal of the barriers was only a temporary measure. He explained the experiment would probably start again by the spring, once improvements had been made to nearby traffic lights.
