Shouldn’t alarm bells be ringing over the Calor Gas incident on Canvey?

This “major hazards site” is granted permission to be self-regulating. But rather than practicing safe procedures, we discover not only is regular maintenance in the way of bursting disks, due for replacement annually, left unchanged for 11 years, but also the alarm system failed to operate.

Are there no tests carried out? Are there no regular maintenance procedures?

There could well have been a catastrophe for the island and it’s residents.

Should a spark have been created I assume the vapour cloud could have ignited, causing the pipework to explode. From there the nearest tank could have gone up, in turn igniting the next tank and so on, in a domino effect.

How close were we to a major disaster? Does the £27,500 fine on Calor Gas really reflect what could have happened?

Should not our council be protecting our well being?
