When I visit Southend I witness Southend Council spending taxpayers’ money at an ever-increasing rate.

The expensive bus lane and traffic light system from Queensway to Chichester Road are now in the process of being ripped up. The junction of Queensway and Southchurch Road has had its zebra crossing traffic island expensively modified and the metal railings uprooted, despite the fact they have only recently been replaced.

The seafront road is being uprooted and changed yet again. This is costing £7.3million and causing major chaos over many months to pedestrians, motorists and seafront retailers.

The advantages of the new layout are highly questionable, but the justification for spending such a huge amount of public money at this time is even more questionable.

No doubt Southend Council will justify at least some of this massive spending by stating that it is “only European money”

it is spending.

But when will Southend Council finally realise that “European money” is, in fact, simply British taxpayer money which has been recycled to us after having been passed through the highly inefficient and corrupt Brussels bureaucratic machine?
