By what legal finagling of employment legislation are two Basildon firefighters deemed “guilty” of writing letters expressing their fears for the future of the county’s fire service to a member of the Essex Fire Authority (Jan 5)?

An employment “crime”

has seen them suspended, with 40 of their colleagues placed under investigation, for speaking out about fire service cuts and angering the service’s hierarchy.

How many are aware that the British worker has – unlike the vast majority of workers in the developed world – no legal right to withdraw his labour and go on strike without being held in breach of contract and thus liable to instant dismissal?

We’re all in this together eh? Not in employment law we’re not.
