I went to the Towngate Theatre, Basildon, to lend my support to the group protesting against the development of Kent View Road recreation ground in Vange.

I have lived in the area all my life and feel strongly that, after intensive development, what little parkland remains should be preserved for future generations.

I realise I am naive, but I always assumed the council was there to represent the interests of the majority of constituents, and that meetings such as the one at the Towngate were forums for the public to air their views, and for councillors to consider these objectively.

The whole exercise was totally academic. The Conservative councillors had already decided, for financial reasons, to pass the proposal and the many valid arguments made by the public were given no consideration.

The council seems able to change its policies at any time to suit its aims, hence the disregard for its own policy documents which purport to protect urban open space.

I am certain councillors would not tolerate their local parkland being destroyed in this way.

The upgrading of Swan Mead recreation ground is an exercise in soft soap which pleases a few at the expense of many.

I am left with a dim view of the Conservative council.

Both the ward councillor and local MP have been conspicuous by their absence in all of this, and I will ensure my family and friends are aware of this at the local elections in May.
