The Yorkshire Ripper has had his request not to have to serve the remainder of his natural life in prison, turned down.
It has cost the taxpayer some £400,000, simply to arrive at a ruling that possibly the vast majority of the population would have wanted, simply to feel safe in their beds at night.
The legal system offers the best-paid defence lawyers for those who commit the most heinous of crimes, while the rest of us would have to put our hands in our pockets to fund own defence should we ever find ourselves on the wrong side of the law.
It’s hard to imagine the kind of conscience that any lawyer must have trying to serve the interests of his client, when the lawyer knows in his own heart that he’s defending a “wrong one”.
