I doubt Belton Way, at Leigh, is really the best site for a new hospice, but probably just the cheapest.

I am now in my mid sixties and have seen a steady degradation of that piece of land over my lifetime.

To those like myself, born and bred in Leigh, that area is where generations of Leigh children played football and cricket during the summer.

Along that strip of land next to the railway line there used to be at least three ponds where we used to watch a wide variety of wildlife, including crested newts, and do occasional pond dips.

It was just grazing land which we were happy to share with the odd cow.

Then about 20 or 30 years ago the Salvation Army decided to plough it for grain.

What happened to the wildlife I have no idea. Now Havens Hospice wants to degrade it further and I have no doubt others will follow its lead.

I would encourage Haven Hospices to think how much it values the continuing support of the people of Leigh.

I, for one, have raised many thousands of pounds for it in the past, but would be less likely to continue that support if it continues with its application.
