The Echo reported how a Southend Council meeting “put the brakes on parking rules” (June 14).

I want to know why seafront residents are being asked to fork out for pay-and- display parking outside their homes to help solve the council’s budget problems.

The council’s own figures show the interest payments on the ever-increasing debt mountain are already costing 16 per cent of council tax. That’s £11million a year we could be using elsewhere.

On the basis that the Tory administration intends to increase borrowings further, does the leader, councillor Nigel Holdcroft, intend to introduce charges for all residents to reduce the deficit his administration is running up? Southend Conservatives are as bad as Labour with our money.
