WHAT a bargain! Castle Point’s Rebecca Harris has made the top ten of the UK’s most value for money MPs.

The Conservative parliamentarian was ranked seventh on the list, which worked out how much every MP cost for each vote they made in the House of Commons.

Mrs Harris cost taxpayers £143,671 in the last financial year, which can be broken down to £74,554 in expenses and a salary of £69,117.

Meanwhile, she voted a whopping 341 times in that period, working out at a cost of £421 per vote.

At the other end of the scale former Prime Minister Gordon Brown was the worst offender – he voted just 33 times in the same period, costing a shocking £5,958 per vote.

Mrs Harris, who replaced Independent MP Bob Spink following her victory in the 2010 General Election, said she was delighted to find she was providing value for money for her residents.

She added: “There are certain costs of running an MP’s office.

“However, I have made a concerted effort to keep the cost of my work at a minimum.

“This includes hidden costs such as not tabling unnecessary parliamentary questions.”

It all adds up to a successful year for Mrs Harris, who was named Tory backbencher of the year by grassroots political website Conservative Home.

The website’s editor Jonathan Isaby said he selected the Castle Point MP for her work in bringing the Daylight Saving Bill before the House of Commons.

The bill has called for a Governmental review to look into changing UK clocks to mainland European time in order to provide lighter evenings in the winter.

It has been backed by a host of sports organisations, the tourism industry, and road safety campaigners.

It is currently progressing through Parliament.

She also appeared in the top ten of an online poll to find Britain’s sexiest MP.
