The article “Council car park could be sold to make way for retail units and flats” (Nov 14) was misleading.

To set the record straight on Wickford town centre regeneration, at last week’s cabinet meeting an outline of budget priorities, including in principle support for the disposal of land to facilitate the regeneration of Wickford, was considered.

I spoke in support of this objective, in keeping with my aims to ensure the town centre does not wither and die.

I was asked by the Echo what sites would be sold. My answer was the council would consider the sale of any site which would contribute to the successful regeneration of Wickford.

I was also asked what landholdings the council had and my response was that the largest are the car parks, market site and swimming pool site.

Although the council has, and will continue to have, informal discussions with interested parties, there are no firm proposals at this time, nor are council landholdings being actively marketed.

With regard to the principles of the masterplan to deliver a vibrant and sustainable town centre, there has been no change. What will have changed is the markets, in turn this will change details of the plan, ie, more houses, fewer flats.

However, the demands for a viable retail centre with vibrant evening economy, the provision of the much- needed healthcare facilities and investment in community and environmental infrastructure remain.

Although the article implied car parking would be lost, the council is committed to ensure no loss of parking provision in the town centre.

Basildon Council recognises people want, and need, to run cars and without sufficient parking they will not support local business.

Our commitment to business across the borough means we will ensure their customers can park conveniently.
