FEMALE cops across Essex were been given a special briefing – about their underwear.
Essex Police has advised its women officers not to wear underwired bras for work because if they were shot in the chest, wearing an underwired bra could cause further injury.
In a letter, given to Essex officers following advice from the Police Federation, women cops were told that there is no such thing as a “bullet-proof bra”.
Instead they have been told to invest in some sensible smalls from good old Marks and Spencers.
The letter read: “Although there is no such thing as a bullet-proof bra, a good comfortable fitted non-wired bra from a retailer like Marks & Spencer would help prevent ballistic damage.
“Body armour has to be close fitting and you should wear a bra that does not contain metal objects.
“You should not wear underwired bras as the metal can be driven into the skin, causing more damage.”
A spokeswoman for Essex Police said the force’s health and safety officers supported the move.
But one unnamed female constable said: “It’s a bit bizarre, as while obviously our safety is being taken seriously, the chances of getting shot in Essex are very small.
“It’s just a shame they didn’t think about our busts when they brought the new uniforms in, as they are so tight you have to wear a padded bra otherwise everyone can see your nipples unless you wear your stab vest.”
Black T-shirts, were brought in earlier this year to save cash.
