As a driving instructor with more than 25 years experience, I feel I can speak with some authority on the “kamikaze sliproad” at the junction of the A127 and A176 in Basildon.

Essex County Council should address this problem before there is a fatal accident.

There have been many collisions at this junction, which the council has been aware of, but apparently dismissed.

The accident on February 21 involved one of my instructors, a top grade tutor. He was driving himself, turning left from the sliproad off the A127 towards Billericay.

He was doing it correctly when he was hit at some speed from behind. As a result, he had to be cut from the vehicle and be taken to hospital. He will be incapacitated for six weeks with severe whiplash.

Your correspondent WH Diment (March 12) suggests careful observations joining a main road should be done by the wing mirrors.

At this junction wing mirrors are of little use for a person with neck or back problems, or foreign lorry drivers who often use the junction.

Since the accident, the road markings have changed.

To join the roundabout in the conventional way the left lane is clearly marked to go straight ahead to the Pipps Hill industrial estate.
