A CHARITY is more than £35,000 better off after a dazzling fundraising event.

On Saturday, Havens Hospices welcomed 300 guests to the Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff for an evening of fine dining and fundraising at the “Amethyst Ball”.

Guests arrived to a champagne reception followed by a three-course meal and entertainment from Angelo Starr, the late Edwin Starr's brother.

Havens Hospices Patron, actor Rudolph Walker, made a poignant speech about the importance of local hospice care and the evening was hosted by BBC Essex presenter Dave Monk.

The ball is now in its third year. Trisha Snow from Havens Hospices said: "It was a spectacular evening and I'm thrilled with such an amazing result, especially in the current financial climate. Our guests helped us to raise £36,569 which I am so thankful for."

Diners generously bid in a grand auction and silent auction as well as purchasing tickets into a luxury draw.

Lucky winners walked away with tickets to see pop sensation One Direction in a private box at the 02 arena, the chance to be a breakfast show presenter on Southend Radio plus a VIP trip to watch Arsenal play Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium.

Trisha added: "Our supporters who donated auction items and bought tickets for the evening are second to none. We're deeply grateful to them for helping to ensure the survival of the hospices. Without them, the care we give to children and adults with serious illnesses simply wouldn't be possible."

Havens Hospices incorporates Little Havens and Fair Havens Hospice and the charity has to raise £100,000 every week so it can be there for everyone who needs its care. The fourth jewel themed fundraising ball will be held in the spring of 2013.
