A HUSBAND-and-wife policing team will be playing their part at the Olympic mountain biking in Hadleigh .

Southend PCs Daren and Emma Chambers, who have been married for six years, will be using their different skills to keep the public safe.

Keen cyclist Daren usually works as a beat bobby in Southend, but has taken a break to train 11 other officers in advanced cycling skills.

This means they will be able patrol the hilly terrain of the Olympic site – and have even had a chance to ride the course in the months leading up to the event.

Emma normally works as a neighbourhood officer in Hullbridge, but will be advising police brass on the available resources in the event of an emergency.

Daren said: “Cycling is a hobby of mine, so I’m really lucky to be able to combine it with work.

“The quickest way to get around Hadleigh Farm is by bike, so on the days of the event me and the other officers will be on hand to deal with any issue which may arise.”

He will also be involved with security patrols outside the site.

Emma was seconded to Essex Police headquarters as a public order tactical advisor for the Games, because she has trained officers in the past in dealing with public order problems.

She said: “Hadleigh is a world-class venue and I’m looking forward to the event. It’s great to be involved. I was heavily involved in the torch relay through Southend, Rayleigh and Hadleigh. There was a lot of planning involved and it was hard work, but it was all worth it on the day. It was a fabulous experience.”
