A TEENAGER caught trying to burgle Southend United’s home ground has been given a slap on the wrist.

The 14-year-old miscreant had got into Roots Hall with the intention of stealing from inside.

He and an accomplice had made their way to the Far Post bar before they were spotted by security.

The boy was hiding behind the bar, but was then chased into the kitchen area before being apprehended.

Police were then called to the scene, on Thursday May 24, to arrest him and put him before the courts.

Luckily, nothing was stolen during the incident and no damage was caused to the building.

The boy, who is from Westcliff but cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Southend Youth Court.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and was given a six month referral order.

This means he must attend appointments with the Youth Offending Service for the next six months in an effort to address his offending behaviour.

He must also pay £15 in court costs.

A spokesman for Southend United said they hoped the teenager would learn from this.

He said: “This sort of crime, whilst maybe considered petty, can cost the football club hundreds of pounds in lost stock.

"We hope today’s sentence will help this youngster understand the consequences of his actions.”
