SAMANTHA Graham, 13, is showing a maturity beyond her years by refusing to shake hands with a fire chief who crossed a picket line (July 17).
Conversely, Essex Fire Chiefs are showing the maturity of a three-yearold.
To suggest receipt of her young firefighter’s award is dependant on a handshake devalues it completely.
She earned the award and should be given it. Fire chiefs should be adult enough to let her have it.
We are still have the right to protest in this country (just!), but Essex fire management, by their recent rulings, make it seem that any disagreement is to be punished.
I suggest they grow up and realise part of their job, when making tough decisions, is to expect some flak.
