A CONGREGATION are pruning and preening their gardens in preparation to raise money for their church.

Eight keen gardeners will be showing off their work to raise money for St Mary the Virgin church, in High Road, Benfleet.

It is the first time the church has run the event and money will go towards the upkeep of the church.

Eileen Miller, is one of those opening her garden to the public.

She said: “There a few of us opening up our gardens for the event.

“People will buyaticket and then be able to come and look round, there will also be tea and cake on offer.Ihave been going mad, trying to get everything ready.

“It is the first time I have done anything like this butIhave been to other open garden events and loved it.” There will be around eight gardens to see across Thundersley, Benfleet and Canvey Island. The event is on September 1 from 1pm until 6pm. Tickets cost £3 for adults and the event is free for children. Visitors will be given locations and directions to find each garden.
