SEAFRONT traders and politicians called for an overhaul of Southend’s draining system as some parts only work at low tide.
Martin Terry, Southend councillor responsible for public protection and waste, wants Anglian Water to invest in seafront drainage as some pipes meant to release rainwater into the sea only work when the tide is out. The ends of two soft “duck’s bill” outflow pipes, opposite Hartington Road and Southchurch Avenue, are designed to fold closed when the tide is in, meaning only the pipes connected to pumping stations can clear rainwater from the seafront.
Anglian Water admitted flooding is to be expected when heavy rain falls during high tide in emails leaked to the Echo.
Businesses in Marine Parade flooded after very heavy rain fell when the tide was in early this month.
Mr Terry said: “It’s quite clear the infrastructure in Southend is not up to scratch and it needs major capital investment.”
Anglian Water declined to comment when approached by the Echo.
