MAYFAIR and Park Lane could be replaced by Basildon and Southend if the towns win the battle to feature on a new Monopoly board.

Campaigners want people to vote for their towns to be immortalised on the world-famous game's board.

For the first time, Monopoly maker Parker is deciding the 22 locations on a UK-wide game board based on the passion of the people who live in the towns and who log on to vote.

Malcolm Buckley, Basildon Council leader, believes the town could take the place of one of London's most prestigious addresses.

He said: "Without a doubt, it should be on there. Everybody knows Basildon is politically the most important town in the country. It is also one of the greatest.

"We have one of the best retail areas, the Festival Leisure Park, and coming up in July we have Bas Fest, which is one of the largest free festivals in the country.

"It's well worthy of becoming one of the dark blue squares on the board."

Meanwhile, in Southend, council leader Murray Foster also believes his town should be on the board.

He said: " Southend should feature because it offers a lot of activities and it has a good mix of everything.

"It's by the water, it has got great parks, a good nightlife, a heritage."

Joanna Austin, from Parker, said: "It's very exciting to see which location will have the most passionate population.

"The people of the UK are massively patriotic and will also certainly get behind their cities, towns and villages.

"It will be interesting to see how the big cities fare against the smaller villages."
