CAMPAIGNERS behind a road safety petition in Leigh say local roads should have been made safer years ago.
With the Echo's help, Mark and Faye Turffrey have gathered around 2,000 signatures, calling for safety improvements around the junction of Rectory Grove and Elm Road.
Sheri Lawrence, 20, of Kents Hill Road, Benfleet, was killed in a crash two weeks ago, after being hit by a car near the junction.

Ideas for improving the safety of the area include speed cameras and road humps, better signs and a lower, 20mph, speed limit.
Critics have accused the campaign of being a knee-jerk reaction to the tragedy, but Mr Turffrey, from Shoebury, insisted this was not the case.
He said: "My wife works at That's Bizarre, in Broadway West, not far from where the accident happened.
"She and I have been saying for years something needed to be done about the road in Leigh. It took something like this awful accident to make people stand up and take notice.
"There has been an amazing response. So many people have been supportive. Something needs to be done to stop any more tragic accidents."
