HOMEOWNERS are preparing to get their hands dirty in an effort to tidy up a rundown part of town.

People living around Warrior Square, Southend, have united to make their area a cleaner and safer place to live.

The Residents of Warrior Square Association has organised a clean-up of the square on Saturday, May 12, when families, councillors and police will all be rolling up their sleeves to give their patch a spring clean.

Paul Harris, 45, chairman of the association, said the clean-up was the start of what he expected to be a gradual process.

Mr Harris, who lives in Warrior Square, said the first task was to try to stop drunks and drug-users visiting the park at night.

He said: "We met with senior members of the local police force, who agreed to run regular patrols and clear the park of undesirables.

"Since late July, there has been a high police presence in the park.

"They have cleared the whole area and late summer and autumn saw many families and local workers at last enjoying the tranquillity of a town centre park.

"The police have been a huge help, in particular PC Wyn Sharp."

Mr Harris said the group's eventual aims were to get better lighting in the square, a CCTV system and a good play area for children.

He also wants to get better railings and gates and improve the general feel of the area by planting shrubs, replacing park benches and providing more bins.

The clean-up on May 12 takes place between 11am and 3pm and snacks and refreshments will be provided.
