A POPULAR seafood stall that had been closed for refurbishment has opened its doors once more - but with the addition of an upmarket restaurant.

The Fish Market Restaurant and Seafood and Oyster Bar, in the Benfleet conservation area, has replaced the old Clarke's fish stall and will sell all the old favourites such as cockles and whelks. It will also stock wet fish bought daily from local boats and London's Billingsgate Market.

The restaurant is set to offer a range of dishes, including locally produced meat and vegetarian alternatives.

Chef Chris Collins said: "We will be giving people good, fresh, locally-grown produce.

"We are passionate about food and confident we have got it right."

Castle Point MP Bob Spink, who opened the restaurant, said: "I am particularly pleased local food will be sourced where possible.

"The conservation area is a superb Essex asset, with our ancient church, St Mary's, the new war memorial, the three excellent pubs and other great restaurants.

"We must ensure we continue to protect it carefully and enjoy it."
