A WOULD-BE conman failed to get inside an 81-year-old woman's home.

The pensioner was at her home in Rantree Fold, Laindon, when a man knocked at the door claiming he was checking drainage pipes in the area and needed to turn off the victim's water supply.

The woman was suspicious and did not let the man in.

He left saying he would return later.

He is described as white, clean shaven, aged between 20 to 30, of medium build with mousy-coloured hair.

He wore a yellow T-shirt and orange trousers.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
