DISSATISFIED residents have demanded the county council sort out its "shoddy" repairs.

Four weeks ago, contractors were sent to Albany Road, Wickford, to relay a stretch of pavement following many complaints about the uneven and dangerous surface.

But the residents are extremely unhappy with the standard of work and want it done again, properly. Brian Wood, 64, a former refinery worker, said: "I can see they've just sprayed on the covering then spread it out like butter.

"They've left all the lumps and bumps underneath, in what took less than an hour, so it's not even level."

Mr Wood told how the council assured him the re-lay would last ten years.

He added: "This won't last ten months. I'm extremely disappointed with the quality of the work.

"You can even see the weeds coming through the surface already."

The county council admitted full responsibility for the quality of the road and the pavement in that part of Albany Road.

A spokesman said: "We always attempt to ensure that repairs are of the highest quality, using the best available and appropriate materials.

"We are aware of residents' concerns about the pavement repairs on Albany Road, and will be sending an engineer out to inspect this as soon as possible."

He added: "We cannot use the strongest weed killer available as it contains chemicals that would be harmful to the environment.

"This is why we have the problem of weeds sometimes reappearing."
