THE first result in Thurrock Council's election was declared just after 12.15 when sitting Labour candidate Val Morris-Cook retained her seat.
BNP candidate Rob Maloney was second with 436 votes.
Val Morris-Cook said: "We are delighted to keep this seat and the result is recognition and vindication of our hard work in Grays Riverside."
THE first big turnaround of the evening came in West Thurrock where sitting councillor and Conservative ruling group Cabinet member Georgette Polley came last in a three horse race.
Labour took the seat through Julianne Burkey, with BNP candididate Ken Daly, who campaigned on a ticket to get justice for his son Ryan who was killed in a street brawl, second.
Mrs Polley was also chair of the Council's planning committee.
