Remarkable members of the public stood alongside police officers from across the county as they were recognised for their bravery at a special awards ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters.

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh presented the recipients with commendations, which acknowledge acts of bravery in the line of duty, preventing harm to others through their quick thinking and decisive actions.

A member of the public, Dean Cook, was presented with the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society award for his part in a dramatic rescue off the coast of Blackpool.

Mr Cook, of Canvey Island, was walking along the beach when he saw a woman struggling in the water.

Without a thought for his own safety, he dived into the sea and brought her to safety. Mr Cook learnt of his award after an appeal to find him was launched on the Essex Police Facebook page earlier this year.

Mr Kavanagh praised all of the officers receiving an award and said: "Leadership, courage and decency is not measured by rank – it’s measured by what these remarkable men and women have done here today.”

Mr Alston added: "Today is about saying sincere thanks for what you do day-by-day and to recognise that you go above and beyond so often.

My role as Police and Crime and Crime Commissioner is to challenge and support the Chief Constable – and it is remarkable hearing about the work that these officers have done to keep the people of Essex safe.”
