FROM pets in fancy dress to prize winning pedigrees, there was something for all dog-lovers at a popular show.

The event, part of Southend's Carnival week, was held in Priory Park yesterday, where breeds from King Charles spaniels to labradors were on display.

Dog Show organiser Eddie Bishop, chairman of Southend Canine Society and a member of the carnival committee, said: "It's an excellent way of raising funds for charity and a fun day out.

"It's a great training ground if people have young dogs to get used to shows. The kids enjoy it too."

The show had six classes for pedigrees and then all dogs were invited to take part in the ten novelty classes, including a prize for dog the judge would most like to take home.

Breeder Tony Quick, 55, from Southend, was showing his two pedigree salukis. Inca, three, won best in her class while Evie, six months, won best puppy in show.

He said: "You have to spend quite a lot of time just training them to stand still and then you go in the ring and hope for the best."

Best in show was golden retriever Bruce, was owned by Emma Lingley from Great Stambridge.

Carnival week kicked off with the unveiling of the fair in Chalkwell Park on Friday. More than 30,000 people are expected to take advantage of the rides and entertainment in the next few days. The fair is open from 2pm until 10.30pm.The week reaches its finale on Saturday with an illuminated parade on the seafront.
