RESCUED girl Serena Wright plans to raise cash for the lifeboat charity which helped save her from drowning on a Southend beach.

The 12-year-old, who became trapped in a hole on the seafront as the tide came in on Monday last week, was dramatically saved by crewmen from the RNLI lifeboat charity, coastguards and the fire service.

Serena, of Southchurch Avenue, Southend, now wants to repay the heroes for rescuing her by raising funds, in particular for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which is registered charity.

Emergency crews worked against the rising tide to free her leg from a hole she had been digging on the beach. Her grateful mum, Beverley, told the Echo Serena also plans to take sea safety information pamphlets to show her friends at St Bernard's School, in Westcliff, when she returns after the summer break.

Beverley said "She is thinking of ways she can raise money for the Lifeboat charity.

"We are all very grateful for what everyone did to save Serena."
