THE sudden surge of wet weather didn't dampen revellers' spirits at Southend Carnival's children's competition event, held at Prittlewell Priory Museum.

Youngsters aged three to seven turned up in suits and party frocks for the popular annual contest.

The young entrants were judged on their looks and their communication skills by judges.

Nobody went away empty handed as all the entrants were given goodie bags donated by supermarket chain, Asda.

Organiser Janice Jeeves said: "We had between 30 and 40 children there, which was less than normal and that was probably because of the weather which tends to put people off from coming.

"However, the event was still a success and everyone got into the spirit of the day and enjoyed themselves."

The carnival children's teddy bears picnic and fancy dress contest is due to take place at Priory Park today.

Carnival vice-chairman Alan Jones said: "I want to assure people that there will not be any problems with the event. If it is wet, then we have an agreement to use the museum refrectory again as we did for the children's competition."
